What the book is about

Out of the blue Jodie becomes the heir of a house and a past she knew nothing of. After all, her mother had refused to acknowledge their existence. The reasons for this she took with her in the grave. Jodie’s delight with the house is short-lived.

Because the house had been a witness. Of everything that went on.

It was the unwilling custodian of memories that were not its own. Ones that had soaked into the walls, into the bricks and mortar, the beams, the floors and ceilings. Ones that, to its surprise and dismay, grimly hung on and would not let go. The only way to get rid of them would be to air them and share them . . .

The Smell of Memory is a psychological thriller. It explores the long-lasting impact bad relationships within a family can have.

What this story is about

A door opened. A door closed. While it did, the ghost of a memory popped out . . .

After her grandmother dies Carly starts reliving some very intrusive memories that are definitely not her own. Eventually she realizes that she has inherited a mystery that still needs to be solved. That is when she starts on a search for the who, the what, the where and the why of these memories.

On her journey towards the answer she discovers that her grandmother had a past she knew nothing of. As it turns out, her grandmother’s past was not the only thing rigourously swept under carpet. She encounters tender toes everywhere that do not like to be stepped on. There are others, however, who think the past needs airing instead of being allowed to fester. The light touch of an invisible hand on her shoulder keeps reminding Carly that there is someone out there who too needs the mystery to be solved.

Ghost Memory is a novel about a quest into the realm of inexplicable memories.

How this story came to be written

It started with a friend of mine who was convinced she had gone through the second World War. She had some very vivid memories of a bombardment in which she lost a friend. She was desperately clinging on to her friend's hand that stuck out from under the rubble. It was an impossible memory as she had been born a few years after the war ended.
